Veta and three of her friends that I was assigned to keep track
of during the field trip.  Veta decided not to use her new school
bag for this trip so it wouldn't get dirty, opting instead to bring
an older bag.

Veta had a school field trip to the Swore Farms this last week, and she asked me to volunteer as parental supervision.  It was windy, of course, and the roads in the farm were made of loose dirt.  So, with an army of fourth graders and several teachers and parents parading through the different areas of the farm, we all ended up covered in dust.  They had several different stations for the kids to learn about farm things, and the children seemed to be having a good time.

Here the kids learned about all the different colors potatoes
come in.  They also got to watch a row of potatoes get
harvested and take their pick of the upturned ones to put in
a bag and take home!

This station showed the kids how to use a rope to
lasso any cows that might be running off.

This horse was named Downtown Chubby Brown.  He is
one of their quarter horses used on the farm.  Veta says
his nose was very soft!

Gemma helped Veta shake the cream to make butter,
which they had on crackers shortly afterward!

Even though the cow wasn't real, Veta was still a bit hesitant to
try to milk it.  She says it felt weird, but was still fun.

After lunch, the kids got to go through part of the corn maze.
There were questions at every fork.  If you went the direction
the right answer pointed to, you would come to another question.
If you answered wrong, you found a dead end.  The girls had
fun trying to guess which was the right way.

The last station was in a greenhouse.  They were teaching about the dangers of electricity.  I’m sure it was a good show, but it was too hot for Gemma, so we went out and missed the production.  At the end of the day, we were all a little sunburned, covered in dirt and smelling slightly of potatoes, and tired (or at least I was from carrying Gemma for four and a half hours!), but it was a fun way to spend a day with Veta!

Hazel still loves school and is by far the easiest to get out of bed in the mornings because of her excitement to go to school.  Her procrastination in learning her numbers and alphabet has finally paid off, enabling her to attend school not just on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but Tuesdays and Thursdays as well!  She is very happy that she gets to go to school every day like Veta.  Hazel  has adapted to school very well.  She has made several friends and is always telling me stories of what she and her friends did during class and recess.  While she still loves all of her kindergarten activities, she has narrowed down her favorites to recess and lunch.
